Expressing Myself Activity

Girls Circle
www.girlscircle.com

The objective of this activity is to encourage the girls to express their concerns and feelings verbally and creatively. For this activity you will need: tape player, relaxation music, colored and regular pencils, tape, and paper.

  1. Introduce the goals of the activity - to get in touch with the feelings they are having.

  2. Inform the girls that you are going to lead them through a brief relaxation meditation.

  3. Play music or a tape player. Say "Take a minute now to breathe deeply and relax yourself. Feel the weight of your body in the chair. Continue to breathe deeply and slowly bringing your breath all the way into your belly. Breathe slowly, methodically, feeling your whole body relax into a state of peace and comfort."

  4. Say "When you feel completely relaxed and are ready, open your eyes. In silence, write a poem about a concern or feeling that has been on your mind this week. There is no right or wrong way to do this poem because it is your expression."

  5. Allow ten to fifteen minutes for poetry writing.

  6. You can provide additional prompts to help them get the poem started. Use index cards that begin with an unfinished sentence such as "If……..then" or "You……I" or "Here……There". "Just because I am….. doesn't mean I am…."

  7. After writing, have each girl share and talk about her poem.
