This unique
activity is designed to allow a mother and daughter (or father, friend,
aunt, etc) to learn about each other. It also allows the participants
to communicate in a non threatening atmosphere. The
objective is to facilitate communication that does not involve debating
and issue or discussing a "problem". This
helps participants learn better communication by being allowed to talk
with each other about non threatening topics.
The participants
begin the activity by holding hands with each other then securing their
hands together with a ribbon. Now that they are "tied" together
they are no longer allowed to talk to each other (or anyone else). The
participants then go on a walk. The ideal setting would be a quiet atmosphere
such as the wood or the beach. After the participants return from their
walk - they may untie the ribbon. The participants then talk about what
they saw on their journey. They may be surprised what different things
they noticed - neither is right or wrong - they are simply discussing
what they noticed. Then the participants may share how they felt during
the walk, when they were not allowed to speak, and after they were untied.
Again, there is no right or wrong - they are discussing their feelings.
